What is an HPI check?

When purchasing a used car the added security of an HPI check can help make sure there are no nasty suprises in the future. There are many things to consider when buying a car such as whether the car has been stolen, are there any unpaid loans against the car or is the mileage true.

An HPI check will look at the following:

Tick

Outstanding finance
24 out of every 100 vehicles checked with HPI turn out to have outstanding finance. If you buy a used car which has unpaid loans against it then you could be liable to pay or even lose the car.

Tick

Stolen
An HPI check will see if the car has been recorded as stolen on the Police National Computer. Every day nearly 30 cars are identified and added to this list.

Tick

Written-off
Cars can be written off as a result of damage, or if they have been stolen and passed off as damaged in order to sell. 4 out of every 100 vehicles checked with HPI has been written-off as a result of damage or theft.

Tick

Inspection report
If a car has previously been declared a total loss then it must pass an independent examination before it can be deemed as roadworthy. The HPI check will gather and confirm this information.

Tick

Mileage Problems
The HPI check uses the National Mileage Register database to search around 125 million records. It provides the best intelligence available to protect against clocking, helping to show whether the mileage could be incorrect.

Tick

Vehicle Identity
If you are thinking of buying a certain model of car then can you always be sure that is it actually the model you think it is? By checking against the DVLA the check will confirm make, model, derivative, where possible, (i.e. different types of a particular model such as special and luxury editions), door plan, vehicle's current colour & prior colour, transmission, and engine size, as well as how many times it has changed hands. You'll also be told the year the car was manufactured and the date it was first registered.

Tick

Stolen V5 Document Check
We can check if the V5 document that accompanies all cars has been recorded as part of a stolen batch. If the V5 Document is stolen, the vehicle is unlikely to be legitimate.

Tick

Plate transfer
20 out of every 100 cars checked by HPI has had at least one plate change. Usually there is nothing to worry about, but a change of plate can be used to hide a car's past.

Tick

Number Plate and VIN/Chassis number match
HPI will tell you whether the VRM and VIN correspond to DVLA records. It is important to check that the vehicle's identification numbers stamped into the bodywork, on the chassis plate and behind the windscreen match the documentation and do not look like they have been tampered with.
